California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS): Stop investing in weapons manufacturers!

If you were a teacher, how would you feel knowing that part of your retirement account helped fund the company that produced the weapon used at Sandy Hook? Collectively, through their retirement funds, California public school teachers own 6% of the maker of .223 Bushmaster rifles, like the one used last Friday to murder 20 first graders and seven adults in Newtown, Connecticut. When these teachers signed up for their retirement accounts, they opted in to a system that invests on their behalf through different funds and asset managers. Now, we all have the opportunity to tell these managers that teachers' retirement funds have no business being invested in weapons. Less money for weapons manufacturers --> less weapons --> less shooting massacres.

The money behind the Newtown massacre

One way to reduce mass shootings is for big institutions to stop funding the assault weapon manufacturers. FORTUNE -- Do you know who owns more than a 6% stake in the maker of .223 Bushmaster rifles, like the one used last Friday to murder 20 first graders and seven adults in Newtown, Connecticut?

This is a significant opportunity to divert investment dollars into industries focused on environmental and social returns.

This is instituting a change through "the back door" so to speak. Remove the financial support. It makes sense.

It's not just the kids in Newtown - it's thousands of people crippled and killed globally by US-manufactured small weapons. It's the entire countries destabilized and societal fabrics weakened. Yes, NRA, guns don't kill people, people kill people...but the gun sure HELPS.

Guns kill over 100,000 people a year in the US and, yet, we regard their presence in our midst as "normal." It isn't normal, it's depraved. If we can't get Congress to listen to reason, then it's time to take matters into our own hands. Divestment worked for apartheid - it can work in this cause, as well.

Rapid fire guns have no place in our society - they're designed to kill and that's illegal and immoral.
