California State Senate: End the Cycle of Obesity: Pass SB-622-- The Soda Tax!

    1. Petition by

      Owen Goetze

      Danville, CA

Childhood obesity is a problem that affects over a quarter of California's adults and 17% of the children. Sugary drinks are a major factor in the obesity epidemic, and if we can reduce the number of drinks sold and thus consumed, we can reduce the number of overweight and obese people. The American Beverage Association believes that this bill will be a success, they are airing commercials on major networks and using the media to try and overturn the momentum that this bill is gaining. A Harvard Study even found that a soda tax would reduce consumption by 10%. Let California seize this opportunity to reduce obesity! Help us in our support of the Soda Tax, SB-622!

I'm convinced HFCS is a mayor factor in the obesity epidemic

this tax increases revenue for the state, while improving the health of children. Great Idea!

Important to me because I am a nurse and I see all the obesity everywhere.

This is important because it focuses the attention of all soft-drink purchasers on the dangerous effect of sugary drinks AND sugar, in general, on the overall health of the human body! It may even help inspire others to research the connection between brain-seizures and aspartame, the main ingredient in saccharin, the so-called "safe" alternative to sugar, and how UN-safe it AND sugar both are! Maybe people will realize that there have been studies on how and why both these substances exhaust the adrenals leading to asthma, [the adrenals control the opening & closing of the lungs] and blood-sugar illness like diabetes, that, for some reason, the AMA will not take a loud and talkative stand on! Sugary drinks are just the beginning! The over-acidity of a human body which consumes so much sugar, and white flour [which is broken-down into processed sugar in the body] will be open to all the diseases, and more, as health steadily declines. This all affects health insurance, health-care, employment, and quality of life for individuals, for the entire population!
