Bring back UN Treaty for Persons with Disabilities to the Floor NOW

    1. Petition by

      Jawonio

The CRPD(Convention on Rights with Persons with Disabilities) is modeled on the extensive disability rights laws that exist in the United States today, and embodies the underlying rationales incorporated in those laws. Since their passage, U.S. disability rights laws have succeeded in opening doors and eliminating barriers for people with disabilities in the United States in all aspects of life. Ratifying the CRPD would allow the U.S. to continue this proud tradition of leadership and progress around the world.

Senate fails on U.N. disabilities treaty; join Jawonio's fight for equality

The Senate's failure to ratify the United Nations treaty for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities - based on our own Americans with Disabilities Act! - struck at the hearts of people with disabilities. Thirty-eight senators, our public servants, voted against ratification of the treaty, which needs a two-thirds majority to pass.

Former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole, his 89-year old body now weakened by age, illness and war injuries, sat quietly in a wheelchair on the Senate floor Tuesday, watching the debate over a United Nations treaty on the rights of the disabled. He may have recalled an earlier time.
