Boy Scouts of America - Laurel Highlands, Moraine Trails, Westmoreland-Fayette Councils: Stop discriminating against gay youth and scout leaders!

    1. Petition by

      Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh

The Boy Scouts of America, one of the nation’s largest private youth organizations, is actively considering an end to its decades-long policy of banning gay scouts or scout leaders. If adopted by the organization’s board of directors, it would represent a profound change on an issue that has been highly controversial -- one that even went to the US Supreme Court. The new policy, now under discussion, would eliminate the ban from the national organization’s rules, leaving the local organizations including the Laurel Highlands Council, Moraine Trails Council and Westmoreland-Fayette Council, free to decide for themselves whether they are going to continue such a discriminatory and hateful practice of denying our gay youth the chance to join their organization. By signing this petition, we are asking the Laurel Highlands, Moraine Trails and Westmoreland-Fayette Councils to stop discriminating against gay youth and adopt a policy that is welcome to anyone who wishes to become a scout or a scout leader.

I'm an ASM, my husband is Advancements Coordinator, and we have a Star Scout and a Second Class Scout. The anti-gay policy conflicts with the BSA's vision and mission statements and with the Scout Law and Oath. Do the right thing, BSA -- own up to your wrongdoing and overturn this deleterious policy. Membership should be based on character and nothing else.

my husband came from a large family - he would not have had many experiences were it not for the boy scouts. many gay men have participated in the boy scouts and have helped make the organization strong. The time is now to put aside discriminatory policies and welcome all into this wonderful organization.
