Blue Cross/Blue Shield: Reimburse for Out-of-hospital Childbirth Classes

    1. Petition by

      Nini Bambini

Classes taught by certified childbirth educators that are not held at hospitals are often more innovative and honest than classes taught at hospitals. Hospital-based classes must strictly follow a specified curriculum, often excluding vital information, i.e. discussing the postpartum use of contraceptives in a Catholic hospital. Often hospitals cannot afford to offer non-traditional classes such as hypno-birthing, The Bradley Method, or Lamaze. All subscribers who pay their insurance premiums should be entitled to choose where they obtain their pretnatal education. Please let Blue Cross/Blue Shield know that today's consumers are demanding a better and more comfortable experience and should be entitled to the same reimbursement that they would receive if they took their classes at a hospital!

Every day we hear about the dangers of cancer, heart disease and AIDS. But how many of us realize that, in much of the world, the act of giving life to a child is still the biggest killer of women of child-bearing age?

      -- Liya Kebede

      * The message of our campaign is "Make every mother and child count". This campaign is not just about health. It is also a powerful call for radical progress in women's rights and the rights of their children. Too often, the health of mothers and children does not count. In too many parts of the world, they are forgotten.

Because out of hospital birth classes taught me how NOT to end up with a C-section. I gained important info that the hospital birth classes never covered...things about how to stretch my pelvic opening with gemte exercises, supplements that helped, nutrution based self care and much more. I learned NOTHING from my doctor. The hospital birth classes were all about Lamaze an outdated sham of unhelpful techniques that do nothing to support labor. "Hoo HA" my ass, how stupid!

I'm an independent childbirth educator, and most of my students will come to me whether they're reimbursed or not. But since they have few interventions and a low rate of anesthesia or surgery, they deserve reimbursement for the small cost of my 24-hour course. Like doulas, good childbirth classes will save insurers money.

Because Nina at Nini Bambini changed my life and all women should be able to take classes at an establishment like this.

Parents to be should have the ability to choose where they want to have childbirth classes and not be forced to settle because of financial reimbursement.
