Big Government Persecution of Small Farmer Alvin Schlangen

Alvin Schlangen, a peaceful Minnesota farmer and volunteer manager of Freedom Farms Coop, connects people with the foods of their choice from local producers. He believes in a food system in which small family farms do what is best for the environment and the animals, and in doing so we get the products that are best for people. Alvin volunteers his time to facilitate a system where the money from the consumer goes back directly to the producer to be put back into the land.

Sounds great, right? Only problem with it: Big Business thinks that Alvin and others like him are stealing their market shares, so legislators get lobbied and state and federal agencies are used to run Alvin, and the small family farms he supports, out of business and even put them behind bars!

Over the past two years, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture has illegally raided Alvin’s van, warehouse, and farm multiple times. Thousands of dollars worth of food has been needlessly stolen and detroyed.

The state has now brought multiple misdemeanor accounts against Alvin in multiple counties. If convicted of these charges, Alvin is facing hefty fines and years in jail... his crime? Helping to connect consumers to the producers and foods of their choice.

    1. Hennepin County Trial: Acquitted on all charges!

Yesterday the jury found Alvin not guilty on all counts! We are thankful for this victory but know that the journey continues. In the afternoon the MDA already issued their statement that they plan to continue persecution ( http://www.mda.state.mn.us/en/news/releases/2012/nr-2012-09-20-milk.aspx ), and we need to expose their criminalization of food freedom and armed attacks on peaceful farmers and get it stopped. If you want to let the MDA know what you think about their attacks, please contact Michael Schommer, Communications Director, MDA at 651.201.6629, or email Michael.schommer@state.mn.us .

Please keep supporting this petition, and watch here for updates on the upcoming trial in Alvin's home county for the same issues beginning October 9th.

Well, the August 15th trial in Stearns County was pushed back until the end of September so the next challenge is the Hennepin County trial on Sep 17th. We are arranging a meeting with the governor and planning on bringing this petition to show him that people care about the issues of food freedom and supporting local small farmers so please sign and get others onboard!

    4. Alvin's Trial August 15th

Thank you again for signing my petitions. Here's an update:

Alvin's trial from May was postponed, we believe due to the fact that the state saw the courtroom would be packed with Alvin's supporters. He now faces a trial in his home county beginning August 15th and a trial beginning September 17th in Hennepin County. If convicted of these false charges, he could face years in jail and hefty fines.

Please share this petition with others so we can show the Governor that people do care about what the Dept of Ag is doing to small family farms in this state. Alvin volunteers his time and efforts to facilitate a system in which the money from the consumer goes directly back to the farmers who reinvest it in doing what is best for the animals, best for the land, and best for the people.

Thank you for signing Alvin's petition...every signature counts to show the Governor and the MN Dept of Ag that people are noticing the injustice taking place against a farmer for supplying healthy, humane, sustainable food. With the trial beginning on Monday there is buzz nationwide in the press...Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund just posted an article about the subject..please read it and continue to pass along this petition to others. Thank you for supporting food freedom and proper care of animals, people, and the environment!

I can understand competition, but this is outrageous! It's downright bullying and a complete abuse of power. This is not something I'll let happen, and I'm proud to be signing this petition.

Access to clean and healthy foods should not be taken away from individuals. Freedom of choice applies to this case.
