Benedict Cumberbatch: Say NO to Violence Against Women as The Pixel Project's 4th Celebrity Male Role Model

    1. Petition by

      The Pixel Project

Whether we are women ourselves or if we consider the mothers, sisters, daughters and female friends in our lives, Violence Against Women (VAW) is a global health problem of epidemic proportions that affects us all as more than 1 in 3 women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual violence, according to the latest report by the World Health Organisation. For far too long, VAW has been stereotyped as “a women’s issue”. It’s time for men and boys to step up because their participation is vital for ending VAW within our families and communities.

This is what compelled The Pixel Project to create the Celebrity Male Role Model Pixel Reveal campaign – to engage men in taking up their roles in ending the global atrocity of VAW. The campaign features 4 world-famous men who serve as positive role models and are speaking out to prevent and stop VAW, and encouraging other men and boys to do the same.

We are asking you to sign our petition to help us recruit Benedict Cumberbatch as our fourth and final Celebrity Male Role Model for the Pixel Reveal campaign. Mr Cumberbatch will be featured alongside a Nobel Laureate, a Pulitzer Prize Winner and a famous Environmentalist.

All we are requesting from Mr Cumberbatch is 2 hours of his time for our international award-winning photographer Jillian Edelstein to take his portrait and record his public service announcement for the campaign by February 2014. Working along this timeline will enable us to launch the campaign on International Women’s Day (March 8, 2014).

Mr Cumberbatch’s participation will help us raise US$1 million in benefit of the USA’s National Coalition Against Domestic Violence  and The Pixel Project. The campaign will raise the US$1 million through a mystery million-pixel virtual portrait collage of the 4 Celebrity Male Role Models that will be unveiled pixel by pixel as donors worldwide donate US$1 per pixel. As each male role model is revealed, an exclusive anti-VAW public service announcement from him will be launched online.

The Pixel Project will be awarding six US$25,000 grants from our share of the Pixel Reveal proceeds to six anti-VAW charities across the world. We will honour Mr Cumberbatch’s support for stopping VAW by allocating one of the grants to an anti-VAW charity of his choice.

Thank you for your support!

It’s time to stop violence against women. Together.

To the survivors of violence against women who have shared their story in the Comments section - thank you for so courageously doing so as we know it is not easy to even mention it in public.

The question we have received the most is: "Why Benedict Cumberbatch?" And one of the reasons why is his support of feminism through his respect for his female fans and his repeated public refusal to call them "Cumberbitches". Here's a clip showing him doing just that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6q5UpVfd2tE

In the meantime, please keep on sharing this petition with your friends, family etc to get them to sign and leave a message too - every single signature and message/story will be printed out and included with the petition letter sent to him.

I work for a mens centre and we were established to offer a free service to men to give them a chance to front up to their behaviours, particularly violence towards women - the idea for the centre came out of of a mens response to 3 family violence murder-suicides in our community where we lost 3 men and 2 women as a result.
