THIS PETITION WAS HACKED JUST HOURS AFTER A BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING. NO signatures appeared for 11, 12, 13 HOURS - and YESTERDAY this petition had over 100 in ONE day! (with 650+ signatures) I became suspicious... and when someone literally messaged me that she was watching someone sign this petition, I saw the name APPEAR along with number change... and then the name DISAPPEARED just minutes later. I even downloaded the signatures list - and the NAME WAS GONE. Change dot org petitions HAVE been hacked before (May, 2013) Then, some targets were featured as new or trending (like ours!). Change dot org says no signatures or totals were affected - HOW CAN THEY PROVE THAT? I SAW IT HAPPEN! SIGNATURES AND TOTALS WERE CHANGED!
I have contacted change dot org - and am waiting for a response. I have closed this petition AND OPENED A NEW ONE. You STILL can add your comments at the bottom of this petition, however!!!
I find it deeply troubling that a petition suddenly 'goes dark' HOURS after a deeply contentious Board of Education meeting.
Here is our NEW PETITION -
On July 1, 2013, one of your teachers - Jennifer Lenihan - took her own life. Her step-dad shared at a recent Board of Education meeting that she had been harassed by administrators in front of her students and other staff members. According to Jason Henry (SGV Tribune, (9/01/2013) Family plans lawsuit against Bassett Unified over teacher’s suicide your district's teachers are afraid to speak out about workplace bullying because they fear retaliation. Another teacher states that the type of belittlement Ms. Lenihan went through is standard in your district. “It is part of what they do, they make you so unhappy, they want you to leave,” the teacher said. Your teachers union president said she has received a number of complaints about the same administrators who harassed Ms. Lenihan, and that morale has dropped dramatically within the district in recent years.
NOW your district has just suspended three high school student leaders, because they dared to speak out on issues relevant to them – even threatening them with vandalism citation for passing out stickers. Labeling materials students share as “propaganda” in an email to your staff is no different than being judge, jury and executioner – all at once. You serve the students – do you seriously think they feel ‘heard’ when you label their actions as “propaganda”? If you are “proactive for our district” – which part? The students? The teachers? Or yourself and all whose motives are questioned – the administrators who reportedly harassed your own teachers and/or suspended your own students' actions as “propaganda”?
Superintendent Reynoso, reversing suspensions raise even more troubling questions… ... This is what Justice Abe Fortas said about students’ first amendment rights … “Any departure from absolute regimentation may cause trouble. Any variation from the majority’s opinion may inspire fear. Any word spoken, in class, in the lunchroom, or on the campus, that deviates from the views of another person may start an argument or cause a disturbance. But our Constitution says we must take this risk … and our history says that it is this sort of hazardous freedom — this kind of openness — that is the basis of our national strength and of the independence and vigor of Americans who grow up and live in this relatively permissive, often disputatious, [argumentative] society.”
Threatening students with a vandalism citation for putting stickers up seems a tad excessive. Why not just have the kids remove any that actually defaced any property? CALLING THEM ‘TERRORISTS’? WHERE did that come from? The sticker that said “Revolution is Coming”? (Americans CELEBRATE the one we had, on July 4, 1776!). Getting a 5 DAY suspension because a student “disrupted school activities or otherwise willfully defied the valid authority of school personnel.” a reasonable citizen must ask, what valid athority did the school personnel have to 'over-react' so viciously?
Where is the balance, Superintendent Reynoso – between your students' and teachers’ civil rights and your district’s “valid authority”? Your student-citizens are learning to recognize the tremendous freedoms we often take for granted – please don’t destroy them in the process!
Why do bullied teachers ultimately commit suicide? Why do bullied school kids finally commit suicide? One reason is that they have cried out for help, and don’t know how else to get it. The emotional pain is intolerable and inescapable. While school kids may be more ‘blatant’ in their bullying, adults who bully become experts in …
(from Breaking the Silence: Overcoming the Problem of Severe Mistreatment of Teachers, (Blasé & Blasé, 2003, p. 73) “Behavior that deprives innocent people of their humanity, from small scale assaults on a person’s dignity to outright murder. [This definition] focuses on how people behave toward one another – where the behavior of one person or an aggregate of persons is destructive to others… In People of the Lie, M. Scott Peck (1983) argues that evil masters of deceit have a need to dominate others. Moreover, they conceal “ordinary evil” from themselves as well as from others. “The evil are people of the lie, deceiving others as they also build layer upon layer of self-deception”…
Superintendent Reynoso, you said (in response to claim of bullying from teacher’s family), “I don’t know that that has been brought to our attention in terms of any written form. No one has brought that to our attention, and they have never asked to discuss this as an issue."
WE ARE PETITIONING YOU TO *LOOK*, Superintendent Reynoso – to INVESTIGATE workplace bullying in your district. We need to hear from your teachers themselves. We need THEM to tell the community whether they are being bullied. NOT YOU! AND you can do this FOR FREE – here -http://www.workdoctor.com/schools/
From “Workplace Bullying in Schools” project: - “…Education, sadly, is an especially bullying-prone industry. Employees who want to work in schools typically have a prosocial orientation and are rarely political in the workplace. Thus, when the rare person willing to exploit colleagues gets hired, she or he can wreak havoc…”
Superintendent Reynoso, you have a job *BECAUSE* of students, not DESPITE them. Your teachers just took the “Character Counts” (anti-bullying) training … surely your character, counts, too!
