Current policy is outdated, antiquated, non-research informed and sex preference discrimination. Transmission risk from sexually active gay men is not elevated enough to warrant deferment from donation. The Australian Red Cross currently do not accept donations from men who have had sex with men oral or anal, with or without a condom. The Australian Red Cross are always in need of vital blood donations to support the Australian healthcare system. This policy needs changed.

100 years ago in Western nations women weren't able to do what men could! Now they can, and one day, gays too, will be 100% equal to straight people!

Because I would love to donate and help the community. Prior to having sex with men, I donated twice yet now I'm banned from doing so...unacceptable

Discrimination on the basis of assumptions about sexuality, where those assumptions are not supported by data, simply reinforces discriminatory behaviour, based on fear, not on facts. Stop discriminating against past and present sex workers, gay men and others who have much to contribute, and who may well be FAR more informed and conscious and careful about risk than many heterosexual people.

A heterosexual man's declaration that he has not had unsafe sex is sufficient for the Red Cross, but a homosexual man's is not.

A heterosexual woman's undertaking to the Red Cross includes her partners, but a homosexual man's may not.

The unequal acceptance of personal declarations under the blood donation policy is a simple case of unjustified discrimination. With the "window" period for the detection of HIV in blood becoming shorter all the time, there is no practical excuse for retaining the policy.

Donation is a gift of life. Gay men can give it too.
