In a country where 35% of homes house firearms, where 1.7 million children live in homes where loaded and unlocked weapons are stored, and an average of 500 children per year are killed by their parents weapons, gun owners must be held responsible.
Gun ownership comes with a great deal of responsibility, and all guns should be locked and kept inaccessible to children. There is no way to legislatively require and enforce that guns are kept locked, however, if a person is careless enough to fail to properly secure their firearm they should be held responsible for the consequences of its discharge. Should their weapon be used to commit a crime, with or without their knowledge, they should be held responsible for gross negligence and be held accountable as an accessory to the crime. How many thousands of lives would have been saved if children hadn’t had access to the guns that were in place to protect them? Is it the answer to the question of gun control? Probably not, but the first step of gun control is gaining control.
