Assemblymember Marc Levine: Support AB 158 (Levine) to ban single use plastic grocery bags.

    1. Petition by

      Assemblymember Marc Levine

By banning single-use plastic bags, AB 158 will reduce the environmental and economic impacts of single-use bag pollution in inland and coastal communities throughout the state.

The negative impact of single-use plastic bags is well-documented. Plastic bags and plastic film together represent 2.2% of the waste stream and these bags take more than 1,000 years to breakdown.  According to the California Integrated Waste Management Board, it costs Californian’s $25 million to dispose of the 19 billion single-use bags used in the state annually.

AB 158 will also encourage the use of reusable grocery bags as a more sustainable alternative to plastic bags.

The damage to Marine life by plastics is immense and incontrovertible. The health of the entire planet depends on a healthy ocean. We cannot continue to pollute with plastic. Period. It's time to stop and take responsibility for our planet.

I supported my city being the first to ban plags (=plastic bags = plagues). I will support it all the way! It makes a big difference, a visible and real difference, for the state with so much coastline, to take this real step towards really protecting the oceans from plastic toxins and strangling bags. Thank you.

I'm studying environmental studies and I hate that my beautiful beach community has plastic bags stuck in the gutters and in the ocean! This would be so amazing!
