PETA is being inundated with calls from distressed Hawaii residents regarding reports that the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources' (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife is using aerial hunting to control feral cattle and sheep populations at the Honua'ula Forest and Mauna Kea Forest reserves. Gunning down feral cattle, sheep, or any animal from helicopters is exceedingly cruel. Many animals who are shot from the air are merely wounded, and their deaths can be slow and painful. In addition, aerial hunts create panic and terror, and the mass killings tear apart families, leaving young and weak animals vulnerable to starvation, dehydration, and predators. Such cruelty is unacceptable by any standard.

Aerial hunting and other lethal methods of animal control are also ineffective. As long as the areas of concern remain attractive and accessible to these animals, more will move in from surrounding areas to fill the newly vacant niche. In addition, a sudden herd reduction will result in a spike in the food supply and prompt remaining females to breed, causing the population to increase.

Hawaii DLNR officials need to hear from you immediately! Please contact the Division of Forestry and Wildlife and politely urge its staff to halt any plans to use aerial hunting. Urge the DLNR to install fencing to keep animals out of specific areas as well as explore long-term wildlife-management methods that are more effective and humane. PETA stands ready to assist!

The invasions of the helicopters are probably what's killing the very birds they are trying to protect! Not only that, but the sheep are a vital food source for many and they keep the fire hazard in check by eating mostly non-native grasses & weeds. Goats are a far greater, widerspread problem.
