Solar energy is hot in Arizona. We’re the number one state in per-capita solar panel capacity in the country . This is thanks in huge part due to the booming rooftop solar industry and the policies that support it.
One of the most critical policies supporting rooftop solar is net metering. Net metering is about fairness; it says that a kilowatt-hour of energy is worth the same price, no matter who produces it. If I generate power from my roof onto the grid, APS buys it from me at the same cost as it would sell the same power to my neighbor. Fair is fair!
But now APS wants to tilt the field in its favor. By implementing a $100 demand charge or paying customers a fraction of the retail rate, they are attempting to muscle out the competition. No Fair!
Not only does net metering provide a level playing field, but rooftop solar power provides significant benefits. A recent study showed that rooftop solar adds $34 million of benefits to APS’s ratepayers . Not only that, the benefits exceed the costs by more than 50%, making it an excellent investment for Arizonans.
Supporting rooftop solar through net metering results in increased generating capacity and decreased transmission & distribution costs. With 300+ days of sunshine, encouraging solar energy development is a no-brainer. And allowing ratepayers to enter the energy market on fair terms, receiving the same rate APS does when it sells power is just the right thing to do.
Please, stand up for ratepayers and fight against monopoly abuses by passing a resolution to protect net metering!
