Another Colorado Family Faces Deportation in Violation of Obama’s ICE Guidelines People of Faith

Paz Mendez, a community leader involved with Metro Organizations for People (MOP) and St. Pius Catholic Church member in Colorado was recently detained. He is the father of three children ranging from 6 - 16 years of age. Paz has been in the USA for almost a decade and has maintained a clean record. Paz has a hard-working reputation and holds a degree in engineering. His family is very active in the community through sport and Church activities. Paz also serves on the Church’s social justice ministry. He came to the USA to escape violence and provide strong opportunities for his children. He now faces deportation. Deportation at this level creates many challenges within the family’s broader community. “We know Paz and his family and they are wonderful community members. Paz is a confirmation leader and his wife is a catechist. They are at most functions/large gatherings, and are the kind of community members that we should welcome and want with open arms. His family will only be an asset to our community, and to not recognize that and/or give opportunities for citizenship is an injustice.

I understand the need to obey the laws of the land, but when our country and economy can benefit by changing the policies and laws, I think we are short-sighted to refuse to do that. Paz is an example of the many immigrants who will make our country stronger if allowed to work toward citizenship -- without risking harm by returning to their country of origin.

I do not know Pat personally, but I know other stories and individuals much like this family. Deporting residents who are productive members of society amounts to cruel and unusual punishment, for people who seek only to care for their families.

Please move immediately to make legitimate the many, many immigrants who are already contributing positively in our communities. Strong, courageous leadership will be required to effect this needed opportunity. This is the new Civil Rights issue for America. United we will stand and prevail strongly for right. Blessings, Judy Feland

ALL people should have the freedom to move, live, and work where they want. Paz Mendez is a valued member of OUR community, and we refuse to allow any authority to take him away from us.

Please keep Paz here in the US. He is a community leader that we need to help make our country better.
