Stop Ringling Circus from coming to Albany

Stop Ringling Circus from coming to Albany

    1. Petition by

      Caring Friends of Animals

There was a time in human history when the enslavement and torture of others was a common, acceptable practice. For a price, it was possible to legally and legitimately steal an individual from their homeland…away from family, friends, autonomy, and hope. Yet today, while these practices still occur across the globe, they are maligned and illegal. Those that engage in these behaviors often end up behind bars. Yet, when it comes to the enslavement of other species, many still turn a blind eye.

Animals forced into circus life endure repeated and prolonged suffering. Sharp hooks, whips, tight collars, and electric prods are used to force the animals into doing unnatural postures like standing on their hind legs or performing synchronized movements. Elephants, who would ordinarily travel for tens of miles with their families each day, are chained and unable to walk but a few feet or even to interact with others. Big cats, resistant to move under duress, are dragged around by the heavy chains that bind them and whipped when they do not comply.

The animals that appear in the circuses like Ringling Bros. are prisoners in a world not of their choosing. They “perform” out of fear of retaliation, of further torture, out of necessity. They travel for thousands of miles in immense discomfort, enduring endless trauma in their confinement, and putting everyone who comes into contact with them at risk. These animals are mere commodities to the multimillion-dollar circus industry; their “caregivers” are their jailers.

Please join us in requesting that Albany County ban cruel circuses like Ringling Bros. Circus from their facility. The families of Capital Region expect and deserve entertainment that does not involve the abuse of wild animals.

The elephants bring with them tuberculosis which is communicable to humans among others reasons.

    2. Our petition was recieved by the Legislators! Now the real work begins.

Greetings from a very grateful petitioner. We have presented our petition to a receptive group of County Legislators. Now we are seeking a Committee(s) to sponsor the bill banning animal circuses. We need to keep growing our signers as this impresses the Legislators and puts pressure on them. I personally have been gravely ill. It is my wish that this go forward with your wonderful help. I want to see the elephants trumpet knowing they will never have to spend up to 28 hours chained in a miserable train car at the port of albany for a few minutes of 'entertainment'./Users/patriciahughes/Desktop/22915735_BG1.jpg

    4. Good News

We prosented you petition to the NY Albany Count Legislature with a warm reception. we will now pursure a Committee to sponsor our request to ban animal circuses here. More good news: IDA is pleased to report that more countries are taking action to protect animals used for entertainment. Just last week, El Salvador banned the use of wild animals in circuses in reforming its wildlife conservation law. Cyprus also passed restrictions in June, going one step further by banning the use of all animals (wild and domestic) in circuses. Cyprus and Greece are the only two European countries that have a total ban on the use of animals in circuses. In India, the secretary of the Animal Welfare Board was recently quoted in an article that all animals will be banned from circuses there within a year stating, "Animals used in circus are treated brutally. They are kept hungry and cruel treatment is meted out to them. Hence, there is widespread demand for the ban of animals in circuses."

Circuses, greyhound racing, horse racing and bull fighting should all be banned! These are only for man's greed. All animals involved in these so called 'sports' are badly treated and its totally barbaric. No need for this type of thing to continue.
