Initiate a Ballot Referendum to legalize Civil Unions in Alaska

A February 2013 poll by Public Policy Polling (PPP) found that 67% of Alaska voters support either marriage equality or civil unions. While civil unions stop short of marriage equality, voters in other states with constitutional bans on marriage equality have nonetheless passed civil unions afterward (e.g., Nevada, Oregon, Wisconsin). Civil unions would increase societal acceptance of same-sex relationships and would show Alaskans that same-sex couples deserve marriage rights in committed, loving relationships. Especially after the Proposition 5 loss in Anchorage, a civil unions ballot referendum would re-energize politically-active LGBT Alaskans and their allies.

This just in from Public Policy Polling (PPP):

"For the first time in its polling PPP finds a plurality of Alaskans in support of gay marriage. 47% of voters favor it to 46% who are opposed. That represents a 9 point shift just from a year ago when only 43% supported it and 51% were against. When it comes to the broader issue of granting same sex couples legal rights through civil unions there's a pretty broad consensus with 71% of voters in support and only 26% opposed to any sort of legal recognition. Even among Republicans there's 54% support for at least letting gay couples have civil unions" - PPP, 2/5/2014

I would like to marry my partner and have it be recognized by law, and so we may be examples to others!

Because we need to demonstrate that Alaska is a leader, that we are "belief in motion" for everybody, and because, it's the right thing to do.

I'm a lifelong Anchorage resident and straight ally. I am so disappointed in our so-called leaders for the laughing incident, and disappointed we couldn't even pass the prop to give basic employment protection to GLBT in the Anchorage bowl. This is embarrassing. Alaska, please move forward, not backwards.
