Petition of the Spotsylvania Republican Party

To Steven Thomas, Chairman

Whereas, you’ve been elected and served a party dedicated to the preservation of conservative values and advancing the cause of liberty and freedom, and,

Whereas, the Republican Party is a private organization of like-minded voters and its leadership is charged with restricting its nomination process to Republicans, and,

Whereas, an open primary, the only kind possible in Virginia, is presently the nomination method to be used in the 2013 as Republicans nominate our candidates for state wide office; now, therefore, the undersigned activists in Spotsylvania County petition our representative on the State Central Committee to use your vote on June 15 to support the selection of a convention for the nomination of our candidates for Governor, Lt. Governor and Attorney General.

there is no reason for other than Republicans to vote in our primary except to skew the vote in their favor. Vote for convention!

If we desire strong Republican candidates, we need to allow Republicans to choose the candidates, not others. Conventions will give us strong Republican candidates because it keeps the decision with Republicans. It worked well in 2009. Plus, conventions are not a burden on the taxpayers.

Case in point for conventions - I believe that the Marshall / Radtke vote combination will be greater than the Allen count in this coming Tuesday’s primary – however, I believe that Allen will win. If given a choice in “general”, the Marshall voters would most likely vote for Radtke if they knew Marshall was not in the running – and Radtke voters would do the same for Marshall if they knew that Radtke was not in the running. I feel we should send the best candidate forward to represent us which is what a convention allows us to do and a primary simply does not.

Primaries are expensive, and the cost is borne by all taxpayers. The Party system works best when only its members determine the nominee.

To not do this is foolish
