Julia Canova started this petition to Zulma R. Toro: President of CCSU and

To whom it may concern:

As a graduate of the 2020 class of CCSU, I write this petition in hopes that the voices of the graduates are heard. Back in March when COVID-19 first took hold of our nation, it was disheartening to hear that the University had decided to cancel commencement, to say the least. We all worked so hard for years, and to not be able to walk to commemorate this accomplishment was heartbreaking news.

However, we then got some hope. CCSU was going to hold our ceremony in December with the December 2020 graduates. This later got changed to October, and then on 9/9/2020 the graduating class received an email that the ceremony would be online due to the global pandemic, as a Heath and safety precaution. While crushing, I think most of us understood their reasoning. It would be unsafe to hold that many people, and to hold a ceremony would be negligent.

Then, some news got brought to our attention recently that CCSU IS holding social events with social distancing, such as a firework show, and the class of 2021 is being given surveys to ask them what events they want/need as seniors. While we understand that these events are planned by the SALD, we know that their is a chain of command and these events must be approved; it is not a free for all. The December graduates are also being told they will be allowed to walk in the spring of 2021. With these things in mind, it is with sadness in our hearts that we implore you to sign this petition. We would like to bring awareness to the things that have been taken from us as seniors, and to the inequity of the situation. It is our feeling as a class that because we have already graduated that CCSU feels our voices don’t matter. We would like to show them that they do.

Please share this petition with friends and family, and sign for the 2020 graduates that you know and love. Our voices will be heard, and our power can hopefully enact change.

Sincerely,

A member of the 2020 graduating class of CCSU
