Parth Parihar started this petition to Zorestina

Dear Zorestina,

A merchandising campaign on your website under the name 'namaste,' currently has a set of clothing and accessories with a label reading "Namaste, Mother F*cker," with the * as an om symbol.  Here is a link to the same: https://www.zorestina.com/Namaste?fbclid=IwAR0gsDPaFzPtXLKoxpPsCo9x7UFR018ZN1H6zZbt28Ie3H8usp-p9iavF_8

As you may be aware, Hinduism-- also known as Sanatana Dharma-- is one of the oldest indigenous knowledge traditions in the world.  "Namaste" is a Sanskrit greeting of great spiritual meaning and reverence used by Hindus to indicate that the same Divine essence (atman) that resides within oneself is also the Nature of all living beings.  When a Hindu says "Namaste" with folded hands and bows, she is bowing before the Divinity that resides within the person before her, breaking down the material barriers that separate one human being from another.

By juxtaposing this deeply meaningful greeting against profanity, the vendor is divorcing one of the most basic fundamentals of our spirituality from its context and reducing it into a provocative trope.  Moreover, the placement of an 'om' within the profanity itself is deeply disturbing, as 'om' is often the recognized symbol used to denote and recognize Hinduism.  This goes beyond using such a juxtaposition for provocative "shock value"; this even transgresses the boundaries of cultural appropriation.  The usage here actively mocks and degrades a religious tradition.  Whether or not this was the intention of the vendor is irrelevant, as the effect this product line has is very clear.

We ask, Zorestina, that you remove this product line from your website immediately.  It clearly violates your own guidelines on Acceptable Use by denigrating a religious tradition. Each minute this campaign is allowed to go on is an insulting, implicit refusal to act against bias directed at the the Hindu community on your own platform.  We refuse to allow our religious traditions to be warped, denigrated, and profaned for the sake of the commercial interests of ignorant vendors.  There is clear precedent for similar products being removed from e-Commerce platforms like Amazon and eBay.  Please follow suit and do the right thing.

Sincerely,

Hindu Students Council and

Concerned Members of the Hindu Community.
