The honey bear (Ursus malayanus), also known as the sun bear is a bear that is mostly found in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia; Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Southern China, Peninsular Malaysia, and the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. Its scientific name is Ursus (formerly Helarctos) malayanus. Adult honey bears usually have almost no predators other than humans with their wild nature and teeth. Sometimes, honey bears can be overpowered by tigers or large -sized batik pythons. Other predators include star tigers, branch tigers and Asian black bears, bears ranked similar to the larger distribution of honey bears. The loose skin of the bear's neck allows the honey bear to wiggle its head so far that it can turn and bite the attacker when attacked. The decline in honey bear populations at this time is usually due to the hunting of “disturbing bears” that damage crops as well as illegal hunting for their fur and bile used in Chinese medicine. Sometimes, honey bears are captured or kept as pets, an option that is said to be good for them due to their less violent nature than other bear species. The IUCN reclassified honey bear status from "lack of data" to "affected" in 2007.
