Problem
Swanky Roots, an aquaponic greenhouse, could be detrimentally impacted. A special review has been requested by CMG Construction Inc. to operate a gravel extraction open cut mine in an Agriculture Open-Space located at 3760 Wise Lane, Billings, Montana.

Solution
We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens who urge our leaders to act now to deny this request, as the operation of a gravel extraction open cut mine would negatively impact area residents, businesses and the Yellowstone River. This proposed open cut mine is not compatible with its location nor with the surrounding land uses, and does not further the goals and objectives of the Yellowstone County comprehensive growth plan.

Personal story
My name is Veronnaka Evenson, owner of Swanky Roots, an aquaponics greenhouse in Billings, MT. My greenhouse is able to provide fresh, local, naturally grow leafy greens such as lettuce and kale to the surrounding community all year long. I am a 25 year old entrepreneur with a passion for plants and people.

The driver of my operation is the fish. They provide the waste which gets turned into nutrients for the plants. This allows me to grow leafy greens without any input of fertilizers. I am concerned the mine could negatively impact the fish in my system and they would no longer provide what we need. This greenhouse is my livelihood, my passion, and I believe a key part of our communities story for years to come.

We currently sell to the public out of our store front and Lucky's Market in Billings. We also sell to Red Barn Veggies in Laurel, Moon Lake Market in Red Lodge, FoodWorks in Livingston, and Roxy's Market in Big Sky. The restaurants we provide greens to in Billings are Hiland Golf Club, Seva Kitchen, Local Bar & Kitchen, Last Chance Pub & Cider Mill, and Walkers Grill as well as a handful of catering companies. We also sell to Samurai Sue's and Prerogative Kitchen in Red Lodge, Peaks Restaurant in Big Sky, and Blackbird Kitchen in Bozeman. We are also a part of the Yellowstone Valley Food Hub, a growers cooperative dedicated to proving our community with access to local food. My greenhouse can annually produce over 275,000 heads of fancy lettuce, plus over 50,000 bunches of greens from the Living Filter Media Beds and 7,277 lbs. bluegill.

My mom and I started this business with community in mind. We wanted to provide our friends and family with safe, healthy, fresh, greens all year long, which is not easy to find in Montana. I am asking that there be more time to explore the concerns and unanswered questions where we may be adversely affected by the open cut mine. As well as considerations to be taken to insure my business will not be impacted by this mine. Thank you for your time and reading my story!
