Almost half of Zimbabwe’s population menstruates yet there is no open discussion about the subject and how expensive this natural experience has become for women. Not having proper sanitary wear is a sad reality and societal issue that affects women at so many levels especially their health and education. Most girls are pushed out of school and public spaces during their menstrual cycle due to lack of proper sanitary wear. Women’s health is also put at risk as women often turn to alternatives that are detrimental to their health. Menstruation is not a choice and taxing sanitary wear is taxing women’s health which is sexist and unjust. Removing tax on sanitary wear will make sanitary wear affordable for women and girls.
