The criminal and sexual exploitation of children is happening in our towns, in our cities, in our communities, everyday.  Children are being coerced, manipulated and threatened with violence to traffic drugs or have sex against their will. To win the war against child exploitation, it is vital we all spot the signs, recognise vulnerability and support victims robbed of their innocence and freedoms.

The media wield great power and influence over their audiences and play a pivotal role in educating and shaping public perception of this important issue. However, daily we see headlines referring to children as young as ten as “drug dealers” or “child prostitutes”.

This inaccurate and victim blaming reporting has to stop. It encourages public apathy, and perpetuates myth and misunderstanding. It is imperative that the media is held accountable for inaccurate reporting and that editors have greater awareness and understanding of issues which impact on children to prevent further harmful and salacious headlines from circulating in the public domain.

Exploitation is child abuse and must be reported accurately as such.
