This petition is by a blog called HAUTE.

We here at HAUTE. love shopping. If you’re anything like us, when you’re running late it’s often best to keep your eyes closed when passing in front of your local Zara, Urban Outfitters, H&M and so on – because we all know how attractive good clothing deals are. Moreover, not only are these clothes cheaper and more accessible when comparing them to designer alternatives and prices, but the turnaround time between collections means that you can always stay on trend and add new pieces to your closet.

But, it’s time for us to face the facts and consider more responsible shopping alternatives. Have you ever stopped to consider the effects that your shopping habits have on our planet? Here are only three simple facts to make you stop and think…

Clothes Seem Increasingly Disposable:
According to a 2019 EU Report, fashion companies designed and manufactured two collections per year back in 2000. However, by 2011, most brands offer up to five collections, with others, such as Zara, releasing up to 24 in one year. Therefore, clothes have lately been associated as disposable goods. This has been reflected in waste statistics; in 2016, UK households alone sent over 300,000 tonnes of clothing to landfills. (Guardian)

Emissions Growth:
The UN has found that the fashion industry alone has a higher consumption rate than the combination of both the aviation and shipping industries.

Overwhelming Water Consumption:
The average water consumption for one kilo of cotton (which makes about one pair of jeans and a t-shirt is 10,000 to 20,000 liters), according to the 2017 Wrap report. Now, if you think about the countries of India and Pakistan as being part of the world’s leading fashion manufacturing region, this statistic is mind boggling – both of these countries are impacted by extremely high levels of water scarcity.

So, to all you fashionistas out there, listen up (!): as convenient as fast fashion might be, it destroys our planet.

If this information doesn’t sit right with you, then please (please, please), take a few seconds to sign HAUTE.‘s petition. By signing this petition, you pledge to make more sustainable fashion decisions and purchases. Instead of shopping at polluting giants such as Zara and Forever21, look into healthier alternatives. Stella McCartney, for example, offers a wide range of stylish and wholesome fashion. You should even consider second-hand clothes, and if you’re in Montreal you know how many fun and cool thrift stores there are! Just by taking the time to research you can help us get out of our current environmental crisis.

We all know that change happens in numbers. As fashionable as we may be, our fashion choices do not need to harm each other. We all share one planet and one home, therefore there should be nothing trendier than a happy and healthy one.
