Zack Snyder, Christopher Nolan, DC, WB, Kristy Carlson & Lora Kennedy: Audition Brian MacQuarrie for the role of Lex Luthor in The Man of Steel 2
My name is Brian Eldon MacQuarrie and I am an actor based out Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. To put it bluntly, in all honesty, I believe that I am the best man on this planet to play Lex Luthor in the Man of Steel franchise. And, yes, I am saying that while being of sound mind and body. I think?
Yes, I have heard that talented actors such as Bryan Cranston and Mark Strong are rumoured to be considered for this role and some might wonder why I am even attempting this campaign. What better way to personify a character that chooses to take on the titan of heroes, the Man of Steel, than to try to beat out two of the best actors alive today for the role of Lex Luthor? I can think of no other way to best portray this man than to show that I also am willing to take on the impossible.
(Disclaimer: because I am an actor, I am more than happy to approach Lex Luthor differently, at the director’s discretion, if given a chance to screen-test for the role. That said, from my research on the character through comic books, TV, and film, this is my adaptation of the character, and the one I want to play).
I want to bring forth a man who is jealous of Superman; a man who strives for physical and mental perfection but believes that Superman’s place on earth over-shadow’s his own greatness; a man who wants to be humanity’s true champion; a man who is humanity’s true champion. I want to bring a Lex Luthor who believes he should be called Earth’s real “Superman." I want to bring a Lex Luthor who will stop at nothing to find a way to kill Superman and all other aliens that could harm Earth.
Lex is undoubtedly one of the most iconic villains of all time and I want to bring the most real adaptation that the world has ever seen to the big screen. I want to bring a man who people both fear and admire; a man who can both fight Superman and is charismatic enough to win the White House. A man who is befitting of the title: Superman’s greatest villain. So who am I...?
I am an actor, comedian, and writer based out of Halifax. No, I haven't received any major Hollywood awards or even credits for that matter. But I have received a Canadian Comedy Award. Five of them as a matter of fact. Frankly, me and Hollywood are pretty far apart. I've never even seen the place. But, here in Canada, I have received industry recognition through my work with my sketch troupe, Picnicface. Yes. I am a sketch comedian. Our 2010 film, Rollertown, our 2011 self-titled TV series on the Comedy Network here in Canada, and our book, Picnicface’s Canada, published by Harper-Collins, made us a comedy cult-classic. Through my work as a comedian I have received multiple “fan favourite awards” and “best performer” awards. And, for the rest of the world, we released sketches online through Funnyordie.com, Youtube.com, and Collegehumor.com. Our most popular video was “Power Thirst,” and I did it all from my home in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Yep, here in Canada, I have received a scrapbook’s worth of awards. My favourite award? Ryan Ho’s Nintendo Championship award, which I won when I was 10. I was considered an underdog in that competition, too.
So why me over anyone else?
I am roughly the same age, height, and the body-build of Henry Cavill. Another important factor is that I have always wanted to be Superman. For years, I thought that my lack of height would mean I couldn't play that role. Hollywood seemed to focus on 6’4” actors. But Henry showed us all that you can do anything you put your mind to. Simply put, even after all these years, Superman had found another way to inspire me. I wanted to take my want and desire to be Superman -- coupled with my work-ethic as an actor -- and delve into the jealousy and hatred that Lex Luthor has for Kal-El, and the arrogance he has knowing he is Lex Luthor. I want to portray a human who attempts to push himself physically and mentally as close to perfection as any human can. I could be wrong, but if there are humans who are afraid of Superman and his alien race… I want to be the man who champions for them.
What have I been doing to prepare for this role?
During my time with Picnicface, I pushed my body to a whopping 300 lbs. with the ideology that Fat = Funny. I was willing to test my body’s limits physically and call into question my own health to give myself fully to my craft. And I think it worked. I want to take that same approach and apply it here with Luthor.
Physically: I have been working with my trainer and good friend Darren Jones. I also met with a nutritionist who helped me get my eating habits in check so I could better reach my goal of having a physic like Mr. Cavill. To date, I am burning 2,000 calories a day and I have lost over 100 lbs. of fat. I have been hovering at 213 lbs. as I shed fat and gain muscle. In plain terms, there is some lean muscle on my chubby gift-wrapped body (reminiscent of the Showdown between Luthor and Superman?). Mentally: I have been reading everything I can get my hands pertaining to Lex Luthor. I have also looked at some of the most iconic and charismatic people in history and famous speeches from dictators of the past. I’m keeping a journal of thoughts as Lex Luthor.
In closing, I have started this campaign because I want an audition with Zack Snyder, Christopher Nolan, Kristy Carlson, Lora Kennedy anyone and everyone connected to the Man of Steel franchise.

And, no, I realize this petition is not about freeing prisoners and saving lives. But when I’m not acting, I’m teaching young and old practitioners how to perform better on stage through improv with a company called Make’Em Ups. And through Make’Em Ups, I run my Mental Health initiative program, a program I created in Nova Scotia to help people with anxiety and depression.
