Early mornings have been a topic for decades when it comes to elementary/secondary schools. Often elementary and secondary schools have a similar starting time at around 8:30. For some people, this is fine however for others, like myself and multiple others I know of, it can be a real struggle and issue to wake up early enough to prepare, get ready for school and arrive all without being late.

With schools now being moved to fully online classes, it is the perfect time for school boards to adjust their school schedules to accommodate a schedule that will be the most beneficial for not just students but teachers as well.

In a recent questionnaire I had made, for non-related purposes, about students and their feelings towards my school there were multiple questions asked regarding early mornings, students and quality of sleep. In all questions, at least 50% of students responded that they do not get enough sleep at night, it is difficult for them to wake up in the mornings and they are often very tired in their first-period class. Another question was asked on what it is the school can do to make students feel better about coming to school and a majority of respondents replied that starting school later would be a solution.

Students are most likely not the only ones who would benefit from later school times either. Teachers and administrators normally have to arrive at school before the students as well, giving them an earlier morning than most, who wouldn’t appreciate a couple of extra hours of sleep and rest before starting off their day?

As of right now with all classes being moved to online studies the schedule is looking worse, in my opinion, than it was when students were alternating face-to-face classes every other day. Now students are required to attend their morning class every morning from 8:25 until 10:55 followed up by the regular 3 fifty-minute classes starting from 12:25-2:55.

To my experience so far with online studying, there is only a short period of time where the teacher is actually teaching and there is definitely no need to have a class running for 2 and a half hours. The majority of the time in my virtual classes the teacher goes over a slide and hands out worksheets to complete. Of course, there are other classes that may require a lot of teaching time such as math or science.

My solution to this problem is really quite simple. With all classes being online, really there isn’t that much of a reason to have “breaks” between classes, so having a starting school time at 11:00 AM and an end time of 3:00 PM with 4 one hour classes would be the best schedule in my opinion, that wouldn’t be hard at all to transition to.
