Colorism affects socio-economic status, job prospects, dating and marriage, sentencing in the criminal justice system, self-esteem and many other factors of life (Hall, 2017). Social media is one of the biggest contributors of promoting colorism. A study by Matthews and Johnson in Skin Complexion in the Twenty-First Century: The Impact of Colorism on African American Women, stated, “In fact, positive characteristics are attributed to those with lighter skin while those with darker complexions are frequently placed into stereotypical categories and judged severely by their physical appearance (Matthews, Johnson).” This explanation is the basis of each one of these videos and using stereotypes to promote hatred is against Youtube’s policy. This petition demands that these videos are taken down so that YouTube won’t continue to allow colorism and violate its own policies. These videos have no redeeming nor educational value and only seek to subjugate and create a color hierarchy or a caste system (also a violation of your policy). Choosing not to do so would be a direct violation of many of the companies polices and would make the platform complicit in colorism.
