I've made this petition to make sure that YouTube and Google, Inc. take accountability for the YouTube platform and ensure that all videos uploaded to YouTube comply with ADA regulations. This issue not only affects the Deaf community, but all communities with audio-processing disorders; we need change now! Thank you for taking the time to read this petition, and I hope I can count on you for your signature. Please share with others!

Hello all! My name is Erin and I am Deaf. For many years now, I have enjoyed YouTube's video platform like many other members of the Internet community. I use YouTube daily for research for college projects and courses, information on news and world politics, and for general entertainment. YouTube removed the ability to add community captions on September 28, 2020, claiming that the feature was widely abused and was not used often.

Since that day, millions of Deaf individuals like myself have been locked out of the possibility of enjoying content like other Hearing individuals can. Not only has this created a huge divide in who can enjoy certain videos, it has also allowed for YouTube to step away from its responsibility to remain ADA-compliant. YouTube now claims that by allowing closed-captioning on all videos, it has done its part in remaining ADA-compliant, when the reality is YouTube is hiding behind legal technicalities to avoid taking responsibility for the millions of Deaf viewers it has left in the dark.

By not requiring proper captioning on uploaded videos, YouTube is not doing its due justice to ensure that the YouTube platform is accessible to all members. Many YouTube creators simply forget or straight refuse to add captioning, leaving many Deaf individuals like myself stressed or frustrated just trying to find a video we too can enjoy or use for proper research.

I hope you join me on this journey. It's time YouTube took accountability and responsibility for its platform. It's time YouTube became ADA-compliant.
