Stop people uploading videos with thumbnails with nudity+uncensored privates on YouTube!

Since this petition is becoming quite long and messy, I'm going to put the key points here at the top and get rid of the old TL;DR. This is basically the summary. It's a bit longer, but hopefully it should be an easier read for you, and generally just cleaner than the main information. In fact, until I fix this petition, ignore the rest...unless you want to read the rest of the buried text.

Important Links:

  • The petition update: It contains my contact information for any complaints or inquiries, how you can help (TL;DR: share this petition and/or help contact YouTube in various platforms and forms (especially Twitter)), and me going on a rant. It was created when I saw that we had over 200 supporters. By the way, there's a hashtag on Twitter for our petition: #MakeYTSafer. (That's also my handle now.)
  • A massive list: NSFW WARNING. Please do NOT visit if you're sensitive or lewd. I have no idea how to restrict it, but it's as good as the ones on Discord and Reddit. It contains three lists: a list of all the videos in the petition picture (in order and grouped by rows), an incomplete list of every active video I've seen that's an example of offending videos (the main list), and a massive list of videos I'm still going through. It's enormous, but I've categorised all of the videos and sorted them by popularity in the main list.
  • The petition picture: The full version of the petition's picture since Change obviously can't support images that are 2240x1260 pixels large. The thumbnails are only 160x90 pixels big, but there are 196 of them. It's also not an exaustive representation of the sort of explicit thumbnails one can come across on YouTube. That being said, some users here on Change are posting uncensored imagery in their petitions, which sort of makes me question the security of the site.
  • An outdated petition: A closed petition like this one that's over 6 years old and has only 150 supporters, but without any truly explicit imagery. I've tried to contact the petition starter, but she never said anything and I don't even think I really have any way to bring this to her attention apart from commenting in her update.

Problems:

  • There are more than THREE THOUSAND listed videos on YouTube, a public site with nearly half of all of it's users being children under 18, with thumbnails that have sexual nudity, explicit nudity, close-up nudity and even invisible and visible PORNOGRAPHY, in all kinds and forms, including inhuman right now.
  • Many of the offending thumbnails are victim to YouTube's automatic thumbnail picking system, and are sometimes chosen with perverted intentions.
  • Some of the videos are a part of EDSA (education, documentary, science and art), which makes any nudity shown passable even to the point of lacking restriction (which is pretty perplexing to me considering how even pornography is a form of art since humans have been stylising everything).
  • Most people don't seem to realise that these videos are still listed when logged out, even though they still prompt you to log in to confirm your age when you click on them.
  • There have been reports of some of these videos showing up in YouTube's default homepage on mobile.

Goals:

  • I want YouTube to start adding videos with explicit/near explicit thumbnails to their moderation.
  • I want YouTube to enstate a rule in the Community Guidelines in which it's a violation of them to post a video with any explicit imagery in the thumbnail, regardless of any content or context. On that note, they seem to have already done that, but why aren't they addressing all of these videos I'm reporting to them? Is it because the thumbnails weren't "custom"? And what about the clickbait one (petition picture row 6, column 12, or B6) that had nudity while the video had nothing of the sort? What's wrong with them?
  • I want YouTube to start buffing their automatic thumbnail generating system in some way to ensure that videos filled with explicit sexual content are ensured to not have explicit thumbnails. Here's how I think it'll work:Since YouTube wants to make custom thumbnails a privilege, the thumbnail generation system will be basically the same. However, if all of the thumbnails are explicit, the user must use a generic thumbnail based on the video's category, the user's profile picture or their channel picture. If they choose a thumbnail that's explicit anyway, it will still warrant a report. They might also be able to choose to alert YouTube if they want, so YouTube can pick a decent thumbnail themselves. However, this won't be high priority for them.
  • I want YouTube to unlist some restricted videos when logged out since they're clearly about adult topics that children aren't yet supposed to know about from the thumbnail and/or title, such as subjects related to privates, swearing, other NSFW topics, etc.

Common Attributes Of Videos:

-Thumbnail was clickbait (rarely done, but mentionable nonetheless)
-Thumbnail was chosen by YouTube's thumbnail picking system
-Thumbnail was improperly censored, or done so in a way that doesn't help (for those of you out there who tried, you should know that there are people out there on mobiles and people that are able to see the max-resolution images)
-Thumbnail had unknown or misleading content
-Thumbnail had real imagery, real/digital models or illustrations
-Video was foreign
-Video complied to EDSA

Common Types Of Videos (common subtypes):

-Animation
-Anime/hentai (anime gameplay, anime music videos, Highschool DxD, MikuMikuDance)
-Art/illustration (olden illustrations, "polluted mind" drawings)
-Breastfeeding
-Dildo/sex toy showcasing
-Documentaries, presentations and education
-Gameplay (Conan Exiles, modifications, Summertime Saga)
-General public nudity (body painting)
-Health treatments, tips and other content
-Medical content (I've recently found some REALLY nasty ones about surgery on privates)
-Movies/movie clips
-Museum exhibitions
-Music videos (The SoapGirls)
-Non-human content
-Performances
-Photography (Sports Illustrated (Swimsuit))
-Television (fashion shows)
-Tribal/foreign/non-urban footage (African culture)

Necessary Opinions (see above list)

  • There are these videos on YouTube where they display imagery intended to trick you into thinking it's NSFW, or where they draw things that start out as drawings of sexual things, but then suddenly turn it into something unexpected and/or kid-friendly, and have video titles like "dirty mind" and "mind pollution". Look, even if you have an otherwise "clean" person, what do you expect? Only dirty things would come to mind when showed these videos. We as humans are finding patterns and connecting things, and apart from the "dirty" things you have in your videos, there's no patterns to tie things together. OF COURSE we're going to be "dirty-minded". In these "polluted mind" videos, YOU'RE the one polluting our minds. Like even a child could figure out what was going on and heck, even learn about sex by watching them! This is not okay, seriously! Also I don't care if whatever else people show us is fake, people will still take notice and make true/false assumptions, and a lot of other bad things.
  • Amongst some of the videos about African culture, there are these ones where they stand up against Google, Facebook, the public and other things for "being racist" and stuff because they're shaming them, the women and the children, for being nude (specifically, topless). And you know what? They're kind of right. We're just barging in, asserting ourselves and bestowing rules upon them saying they're not allowed to show their breasts. All their other privates are covered. Well you know what? There are sensitive and dodgy people around, and just like other videos complying to EDSA, the least they can do is make their thumbnails so that the privates aren't visible. We still need to stop newbie children from getting the wrong ideas and deciding to just be naked in public, starting a lot of problems. Also there are some where they're fully nude (mostly males).

(Summary ended. Please note that the following text is now unfixed.)

(Please visit the link above for a more complete list of active videos with bad thumbnails I've come across. But be aware that that isn't completely up-to-date either. Also, be wary that there are thumbnails included in the list that are not directly explicit, but are highly sexually suggestive. You'll notice some of them as uncensored thumbnails in the image.)

(A TL;DR is at the bottom for convenience. I've also made an obscenely large list of all the videos with bad thumbnais I've seen there's also a link to an obscenely large list of examples of these videos at https://www.writeurl.com/text/qnwns9baspst6qu15zls/3jbmnnf4k92ms15v6foe (NSFW warning obviously - proceed only if you're mature and wary), all of which I've disliked, reported and commented on telling them to change their thumbnails for their own good, linking to this petition in the process, but I also put together a horrifyingly offensive picture to show you some examples without having to open all the links.

However, I've recently linked all of the videos from the image in order within the link to make it easy and accessible in order to save time...for you - I didn't. I spent a LOT more time than I wished to, actually. This is in case you want to go to the videos and help do things about them.

By the way, the link right now is severely outdated even though it hasn't been long at all. So, if you're following me in this campaign, prepare for A LOT of new information to surface, starting with over 1200 extra videos. I suspected the problem might be this bad, but geez. This is a real timewaster.)

Please help me, and hopefully, us all, stop YouTube from ignoring our pleas to cease the generation of content with obscenely sexual and pornographic thumbnails! The continued existence of this content on YouTube is unacceptable and I have tolerated it this much for too long. The idea that many adolescent and sensitive wanderers on YouTube could potentially see and gain ideas from this content is intolerable.

There has already been a petition on this very site about a similar matter at http://chng.it/Cpv5kBD9yc but the petition is five years old, only has 150 supporters, and is now, I dare say, inferior. (I couldn't think of a better way to say it. But I also found a way to contact them about it.) The problem is now much worse, with countless videos actively showing nudity and sometimes even focusing on private parts in the thumbnails of their videos. What's worse, there's even so much as various types of pornography in some of the thumbnails, regardless of whether it's actually visible, human or not. Sexualised thumbnails are barely acceptable (I personally take offence), but this new level of dirty behaviour is intolerable.

The problem isn't the videos. I can always stay the heck away from the content of these nasty videos and there'd be next to no problems if the video is restricted to some point, but making them items where you only have to look and it's your loss is another thing. Thumbnails exist to give the viewers an idea of what the video will be about, but all thumbnails must have and be a warning if the video is about inappropriate content such as these sexual graphics. I have seen videos restricted to 18+ that can easily be seen by their thumbnails when logged out, and that makes this problem global. And the people don't seem to realise that that is so, even if they are prompted to log in when they click on the videos.

What started the snowball that lead to me getting to this petition was the fact that there were inappropriately displayed thumbnails on the incognito/historyless homepage of YouTube. (I'm on mobile and sign in all the time.) One of these videos still bugs me to this day and has existed for months and even appeared at the second-to-top of the homepage, https://youtu.be/CBI0rvaNm_M - I have reported this one countless times, but it's still there. From that video, there were more. And more. And it began to turn into a reporting spree. There is an abandoned account I now access, and eventually, I completely wiped the history and recommendations to get a better look and I was horrified. Now the channel's homepage will almost certainly contain at LEAST (generously counting) one utterly inappropriate thumbnail at any time, and it's really becoming too much for me.

(By the way, since it's obvious I'm not using an account with an established identity, yes. I'm using that account to do this petition. I completely do not desire to associate such sexual, taboo topics with myself, people who know me from anywhere or even my actual online persona. I just want to be heard. It bothers me. And, by the way, when I asked for help on this petition, they were very supportive of the whole thing, including the way I "made side accounts" to detach this from myself, so it's okay. However, I can't promote my petition or anything, so if anyone's willing enough to do more than sign and share this petition and start taking public action, they'll have to do it theirself. Sorry for the inconvenience. Though, on the off chance someone is willing to be my public voice and do big things, my email's in a recent update.)

Recently, I've gathered a couple of reasons why reporting these videos doesn't work:

  • Most of the time, reporting these videos only restricts them - and many I report are even already restricted anyway. But as said before, it seems like people don't seem to realise that restricted videos can still show up when logged out, even though they do prompt you to log in to confirm your age when clicking on them.
  • Some nudity, such as breastfeeding, is accepted due to it complying to EDSA (content that is educational, documentarious, scientific or artistic). Even if it is acceptable, no matter the case, bad thumbnails should not be, because children and people with a sensitive disposition should be allowed a choice to ignore these videos completely without feeling violated. If you were a sensitive person and were in a bookstore, would you like to see naked people on a book about human biology? No, you wouldn't open or buy it: you'd leave it alone. Do you honestly think they'd be allowed to have privates in display at such a general public location?

If you're still not convinced, think about this. Imagine if you were a sensitive person or a child at a public venue such as a shopping centre, and you came across an adult place. Would you like to see their inappropriate posters of men and women? Absolutely not. You wouldn't go into the place to observe these things. Why would you want to observe such things at the front of the place? If you did, you would become offended and join the many offended people demanding they take their poster down and maybe even take legal action against the company. That's why companies like that in public places avoid these kinds of conflicts.

Similarly, I have seen videos on YouTube like that. Some videos with bad thumbnails have become just popular enough for some majority of users to see, and there are many, many videos - more or less popular - like that. The thing is, most of the people at these videos don't seem to realise the problem (if they even care), and there are many commenters just going on about things such as "how lovely the breasts/nipples are". Now you may think that children should just avoid the Internet seeing as it isn't a safe place, but that cannot be helped because nearly half of all viewers on YouTube are under 18. Moreover, I imagine that many of the people visiting these videos are children themselves.

To cut to the point, I generally want this to stop. I want to stop reporting these videos to no avail. Generally, I want a group of YouTube employees and moderators to take over this task: checking (or even finding) for videos with bad thumbnails, taking care of them for me instead of having to report some of them and seeing if they do ANYTHING, and getting more of the videos and moving on. I want the team to take action. I want these people to realise that publicly displaying nude, sexual and pornographic content is not okay, especially on a site where almost half of all users are children. Only a few of the videos actually listened to me or got deleted. We need YouTube to wake up and stop all of this.

I also want new policies, regarding thumbnails. If all thumbnails were okay, we'd all be practically safer and have some layer of warning. If no-one does anything, who knows what people will come across in the future on YouTube? Perhaps YouTube might essentially even feature content worthy of PornHub as some of it's main content, something that will repel/repulse a majority of it's sensitive and mature users - which would actually be rather sad when thought about, considering the fact that there are a lot of promising channels and videos on YouTube who even use YouTube for a living.

YouTube, just, notice this. Acknowledge my pleas and DO SOMETHING tostop the productions of videos with bad thumbnails. Your site is an extremely well-known public place, so it has no place for images at the front practically saying: "SPOILERS, this video has a lot of sexy content in it," even if they aren't sexual and are purely artistic or educational. If this is kept up, your site will deter many sensitive people and attract many lewd people who will repeat and accelerate the process, which is just not what we want to deal with, as general users who just want to surf YouTube and have some family friendly or decent content without having nudity practically shoved in out faces at inappropriate times. Bad videos are generally fine enough and out of the way by themselves, but I want to be left with a choice: a choice to either click on the video or leave it, knowing what's going to happen. I don't want to have to glance at uncensored privates with no choice but to be offended. So, please...

Stop all of this.

Thank you.

(Props to those who read the whole thing and supported it. Though, I still have the main part to fix now that I added the summary.)
