The Serve America Act has brought a lot of attention to the importance of community service and service learning for the betterment of our nation.
Unfortunately, it does not address the importance of young and family volunteers. Please sign this petition and let your representatives know that investing in meaningful opportunities for young and family volunteers will allow our older volunteers to be more empowered, experienced and ready to build a better tomorrow.
I am writing to discuss the issue of youth volunteerism. While I am aware of the Serve America Act and think it is a great way to increase our capacity for volunteerism, I am concerned that it will not do enough to empower and teach the spirit of service within our youngest volunteers.
Teaching volunteerism at an early age through service learning and family volunteerism has major benefits for both the young volunteers and the causes they serve but it also has unique obstacles. For example, trained and educated staff familiar with the special needs of the young and family volunteer are needed. It is also difficult to create meaningful opportunities for young and family volunteers as they are limited by age and experience.
It is still very important and worth the investment. A young volunteer is more likely to stay in school and participate proactively in their community. Family volunteers gain important time together allowing the family bond to grow stronger while also allowing the family to share in the causes that are important to them.
Please join me in recognizing the importance of investing in youth and family volunteerism by providing support for funding and program development that focuses on the unique challenges and benefits of the young and family volunteer. Your support and work for the betterment of our community and for a brighter tomorrow is appreciated.
