Youth Activist; Homelessness in New York City
Why this petition matters
As Rosalynn Carter once said, “There is nothing more important than a Good, Safe, Secure home.” Throughout our lives, being born and raised in New York City, we have always seen people who are homeless begging for spare change or sleeping in the train stations, and on street corners. Just like all of us New Yorkers have a home, they should have a safe and secure home as well. All around New York City, homeless people live and sleep on the streets, especially at night, which can cause the community to be worried about their safety and be uncomfortable around their environment. Some may argue that we can ignore these people, or not go out at night. Others might also argue that it’s their fault that they end up being homeless by making bad decisions themselves to end up like this. However, they fail to realize that our community should not be afraid to step outside regardless of the time and that most homeless people have lost their jobs or have trouble paying rent, not because of the bad decisions they make. This is a formal request to help provide more shelters and help these people get back on their feet by providing them proper health care and being able to afford a house.
