Why this petition matters
Did you know that 50% of Americans suffer from money issues and housing. This topic matters to me because people need a place to stay during cold and hot days. Especially single mothers who are suffering at home and need a place to stay. I am writing this letter to present a problem in Queens, New York. We need a homeless shelter installed. This shelter will help those who need a place to stay on cold and hot days. Some may say this is a waste of money and space but in reality, the homeless shelter will help benefit the community and decrease the amount of homelessness in New York City.
The homeless need a place to feel at home and express themselves. Furthermore, we need a place where those who are struggling don't have to stress about what part of the streets is less dangerous to sleep at. “Lack of affordable housing and limited scale of housing assistance programs have contributed to the current housing crisis and homelessness.” Due to the lack of support during housing people have gone homeless. It is because of the lack of affordable housing people need a place to stay and feel at home. “Lack of unemployment opportunities with the unemployment rate remaining high jobs are hard to find in the current economy.” Unfortunately due to covid, it is hard to find a good-paying job leaving people homeless or poor. Due to low job opportunities, the rate of homelessness has increased. No job opportunities have caused housing to be unaffordable. We need a place to provide for the homeless.
With no shelter, the homeless have to sleep on the street. The homeless result in sleeping on the street causing more problems because they are at constant risk of danger. “37% of homeless people lack shelter which is a total of about 200,000.” Due to no shelter, the number of homeless has increased at a high rate. 200,000 people lack shelter leaving them to live on the streets. “Low-income households often do not earn enough to pay for food, clothing, transportation, and a place they can call home.” Due to low income, people don't have enough to pay for their necessities. Unfortunately with no shelter people with low income will have nowhere to stay. Shelters provide big support, especially for those with low income and lack of housing.
The purpose of this letter is to help those in need no matter the race, gender, or sexual orientation we are all equal. We all deserve a place in this world no matter how many times you mess up. One change can make a difference. With your help, we can make it happen.
