Youth Activist: HIGH QUALITY EDUCATION FOR EVERY STUDENT IN NYC!
Why this petition matters
Desmond Tutu once said, "Inclusive a good quality education is a foundation for dynamic and equitable societies". As a student who was born and raised in New York City, I believe that every child deserves a good quality education. This is why the disparities between Districts for school funding caught my attention and should be taken very seriously. I know that it is very possible to ensure that every student receives the high-quality education that they deserve to help them be the best that they can be. In NYC there is educational inequality present throughout the schools which puts many students at a disadvantage and is jeopardizing their future. Some may argue that students in NYC are taught the same material and have access to the same resources and opportunities. However, this is not the case because there is a great gap in the quality of education that students receive as a result of their economic status and neighborhood. This issue demands that all schools receive equal funding as well as the same level of guidance for resources accessible to students. Educational inequality in New York City is affecting the quality of schooling that thousands of students are receiving and is jeopardizing their future. Many schools that are located in low-income neighborhoods are not given the same funding as schools in high-income neighborhoods. As a result, these students do not receive adequate learning resources like textbooks and have a low-quality education. For example, in other schools due to a lack of equipment, students are confined to observing the teacher performing The Experiment (New York Advisory Committee, 2021). Simply put, certain districts in NYC don't get the same resources as others which are affecting the quality of education that they are receiving. This is critical because being confined means limiting within certain bounds. Students are being restricted to a low-quality learning experience which prohibits them from reaching their full capabilities as a result of the low funding their schools are receiving. We request that schools all around you in New York City receive equal funding as well as the same level of instruction and experiences for all students. Presently there are over 13 billion dollars in the budget of the education system in NYC but many school districts don't receive as many funds as others do due to their economic status. For one thing, providing equal funding to districts "helps ensure that students have better facilities and more curriculum options"(Martin et.al, 2021). In other words, equal funding contributes to schools being able to provide pupils with a wider range of program choices and other resources. This emphasizes that the type of environment and acids given to school districts will greatly benefit students. Providing funds to help expand programs available to students would improve student motivation and overall achievements. To reiterate, schools in New York City do not receive Equitable funding which has an impact on the quality of education that students receive. One solution is to give adequate and Equitable funding to all districts. Nobody deserves anything less simply because of their social class or based on where they live. Experienced Educators and sufficient resources should be made available to all students because that is what they deserve. I am confident that with your help we can make this the standard at every school in New York City.
