Robin Chase once said “Transportation is the center of the world! It is the glue of our daily lives. When it goes well, we don't see it. When it goes wrong, it negatively colors our day, makes us feel angry and impotent, curtails our possibilities.” Queens, New York has been my only home. I grew up here and we always used public transportation. In my case, for school.  I would get to school late because of delays and I am 100% percent sure I am not the only one suffering. Getting this out will help me and other New Yorkers as well. In New York City, transportation delays have skyrocketed during rush hour affecting New Yorkers’ lives. Some may argue that MTA buses pass every 10 minutes, which should be frequent. While that may be true, they fail to realize that delays are frequent and in a busy neighborhood, 10 minutes gets really crowdy during rush hour. This takes a domino effect, one stop gets on, and the rest of the stops might not. This is a formal request to add more public transportation during rush hour and generalize on-time schedules to help us, New Yorkers get on time.
In New York City, transportation delays are growing and affecting New Yorkers' lives. Currently, walking up to 111st MTA train stop, from 7 am through 8 am (morning rush hour) there are crowds of people waiting for the train before you. You don’t even fit in and walking to the next stop won’t help, more than half the people there don’t even get on. According to Alan Treffeisen, he coveys “The average number of delays in a month has increased dramatically, from about 20,000 a month in 2012 to more than 67,450 in May 2017” (Treffeisen, 2017). In other words, in 2012, there has been about 20,000 delays per month with an increase to more than 67,450 delays a month in May 2017. This is significant because “increase dramatically” means by a striking large amount or to striking large extent: greatly. In this case, transportation holdbacks are greatly climbing. Treffeisen notes, “Passenger hours lost to delays on a typical weekday during the morning rush have increased on every line by at least 24 percent from the average for 2012 as a whole through the 12-month period ending in May 2017. Hours of delay have increased most on the J/Z (up 71 percent), C (69 percent), and the 7 (62 percent)” (Treffeisen, 2017). To simplify it, during a typical weekend morning rush, passenger hours lost to delays have increased on every like by at least 24 percent since 2012 average. In J/Z, C, and 7 train lines have all increased by more than 60 percent in hours of delays. This is critical because “increase” means an instance of growing or making greater. This means that our hours lost to setbacks in transport have been greater and is taking time away from our lives. In all, MTA trains in New York City delays have increased which is affecting New Yorkers.
We request that a fraction of the funds set for transportation be set in New York City’s budget to build more transportation services to be sent during rush hours. Currently, there are over $759,096,000 dollars allocated to The Department of Transportation in New York City, and unfortunately, many New Yorkers can’t arrive on time to work or school due to delays in public transportation. According to World Highways, it conveys “The Singapore Government is planning to spend US$72.3 billion (S$100 billion) on transport projects over the next decade” (World Highways, 2020). To simplify it, the Singapore Government is working on transportation projects for the next 10 years with the help of US $72.3 billion.  This emphasizes that the phrase “spend” means payout (money) for a particular person’s benefit or for the improvement of something. We should follow Singapore's steps as it will improve our transportation system, get people to where they need to go, and keep the country running. According to Statista, it reveals “The statistic shows the number of delays lasting more than 30 minutes of the mass rapid transit (MRT) network in Singapore from 2015 to 2020. In 2020, there were six delays lasting more than 30 minutes in Singapore” (Statista, 2022). In other words, in Singapore in 2020 there has been only 6 delays that were lasting more than 30 minutes. This highlights that “delays” means make (someone or something ) late or slow. Singapore's severe delays are not much comparing how much time has passed. We should make them an example to make our city transportation better. In all, I request that there should be a fragment of the transportation fund be transferred to New York City’s budget to get more transportation on the road to helo the delays happening during rush hour.
To reiterate, transportation delays are greatly affecting New Yorkers’ lives. A way to solve this issue is to get more transportation on the road during rush hour and generalize on the dot schedules which will greatly help us New Yorkers. Transportation services should be something, everyone should have. Right now, our transportation isn’t working the best. Public transportation in New York City is part of everyone here and it is failing. I know with your help, we can make it great again.
