Stop The Parking Tickets!
Stop The Parking Tickets!
If you are like the majority of students on campus here at the wonderful Youngstown State University, you probably have a car. That being said, you’ve probably gotten a ticket at least once.
Parking services gives you the option to appeal the tickets based on their recommendation for approval, but even the best excuse may not be enough to help. Personally I have given the excuse that it is not safe to walk alone, appeal denied, solution: call campus security for an escort, pay the $100 ticket. The escort services are just other students getting paid to walk with you with no training, weapons for self defense, or any sense of urgency for that matter. Quite frankly, I don’t think anyone wants to wait in their cars for up to a half hour at night for someone to walk with them, especially a complete stranger, but that’s YSU’s best solution when I called YSU PD for assistance on the matter.
YSU takes pride in their safety on campus, but are the students that live one street off campus not granted that same safety? I have had to help a friend and call the police because a man wouldn’t stop harassing her and throwing rocks at her car right outside of her place of residence, yet we’re supposed to walk at night if there’s no parking and not bat an eye? We are punished if we want to park within a block of our home (that we pay outrageous amounts to live in mind you) with a ticket of $100 per night. I tell people that don’t go here and they are astonished by the prices.
I have witnessed Parking Services make up at $3000 in one night off of one lot because there was no more safe parking. They are ripping off the people that already pay thousands to go to this school. The only people with access to the lots are students, therefore the only people to get ticketed.
On average students pay $45-180 to park each semester whether it be a day pass, overnight, or not enrolled pricing. When living at the Enclave or Edge or any “off campus housing” which is only offered to students, no one else, they pay on average up to $3000 a semester to live without a meal plan. The average salary of a full time student is around $20,000/yr. Students are already struggling to eat, pay other bills, worry about classes, but if they want to safely park near home, they now have to add on the stress of an expensive ticket they get no leniency on.
YSU is giving some of the most expensive parking tickets to the lowest paid people. The price of a parking ticket for blocking a fire hydrant in New York City is only $115 with the average income of $60-90k/yr, over triple the average of a student income. Other universities like WVU and Akron, some of the most expensive tickets are only up to $30 with a much higher rate of tuition.
If YSU would grant the right half of lot 63 for overnight, it would help out so many students/residents, but that takes away their easy money maker. Why would they give up thousands a night when they feed off of our struggle.
The reason for this petition is the need for lower ticket rates, more accessible parking, and more leniency from Youngstown State University Parking Services. The prices are unjust and uncalled for. I petition for tickets to be a maximum of $15, no matter what. Students shouldn’t have to worry about their safety walking to their homes, or if they have enough money for food after they pay an exaggerated fine. Everyone I talk to on campus is fed up with Parking Services, so we might as well try to do something about it by signing this.
Thanks for listening and I hope everyone that has ever gotten a ticket for the smallest thing here at YSU supports this. Go Guins
