Why this petition matters

Started by Fiona Kirlew

Once a young person reaches their 18th birthday, they are legally no longer a looked after child and their placement with a foster family can no longer be classed as a foster placement.

Hi my name’s Fiona and I’ve been a foster carer for 16 plus years and have dedicated my life to teenagers. I have looked after well over 50 young people many of whom I am in contact with (they are my family and come and go as they please just like my biological children do).

Whilst the care system supports young people in care up until the age of 18 after this they are considered adults and many go into live independently (it’s lonely) and quite a-lot struggle.

I personally have never had a child leave at 18 all are welcome to stay until they feel ready to live independently as I would with my own children.

I feel that the care system is failing a lot of young people who need that stability well into their early 20s and therefore would like your help to get the age of a young person supported in care from 18 years of age to 21.

please sign and share… thank you for taking the time to do so
