Following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, there has been an increase in the negative portrayals of Muslims on television and other forms of media. Islam has been alienated across the globe, specifically in the Western world. This has tremendously impacted the lives of many Muslims, struggling to have their voices heard as the media continues to defame them. “Terrorists, jihadists, oppressed, war brides…”, it only gets worse. What most people do not realize is that the messages we are exposed to are capable of influencing our beliefs and attitudes towards this minority group. In fact, a new study conducted by the Pew Research Center found that there were 91 assaults motivated by anti-Muslim bias in 2015 in the United States, which was only 2 away of the 93 reported in 2001. This is alarming considering the year of 2001 was when anti-Muslim hate crimes were at their highest following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It is time to end the hostility towards Muslims and open our minds! If we can say NO to the negative stereotyping and misrepresentation of Muslims in the media, we ameliorate our views and become more tolerant. Thank you for your time.
