Say No to the relocation of the Yorktown Highway Garage!

The Town of Yorktown is planning to relocate the Highway Garage currently on the corner of Front St and Underhill Ave to a new location on Greenwood St.

$4,800,000 has been budgeted for the construction of the new building. But since their plan is to vacate, then demolish the existing building, and then market it to development companies to build more commercial space, where will the $4.8 million come from?

Think about it, does Yorktown really need more commercial space when we have over 250,000 square feet of empty commercial space already?

Even our highway superintendent has said that the current garage is adequate.   We really need to fix our crumbling roads, bridges and buildings.

Well…..The Town Board just applied for five grants totaling $2.3 million to partially finance this project.

All the grants require a town match —and if we are lucky enough to receive every single grant, Yorktown would be responsible to put up $670,000 to $825,000 just to match the grants.

Who will pay this bill??

Even with the grant money and the Town match, we will still be short over $1.8 million.

That money is supposed to come from the sale of the highway garage site to a private developer who will purchase the land for an estimated $1.5.

But — the land will not be put up for sale until after the new garage is built!! Where is the guarantee that a buyer will pay $1.5 for the site?

What happens if it doesn't sell? The taxpayers will be on the hook for that too!

Ask yourself who will profit from this deal, and sign this petition to say NO to re-locating the Highway Garage.
