Biol 3130 Students started this petition to York University

The students of the biology 3130 class (molecular biology 2) at York University, are petitioning against the use of an invasive proctoring service for our final exam. The proctoring software we are being forced to install, requires us to consent to giving personal information such as our name, address, postal code, government ID, phone number, educational institution, course information, test scores, employment information, screen recordings of students taking the exam with screen captures, audio and video recordings of the environment, access to computer screens and most concerning, our biometric data; including scans of our facial features, eye movement and keystroke patterns. Our information is then collected and stored on company servers for up to 2 years, making students completely unaware of who has access to our private information.

On May 2nd 2020, York University fell victim to a major cyber incident which affected numerous servers and workstations. This demonstrates the risk of leaking student information. Furthermore, there was an incident with the Faculty of Liberal Arts at York University where students' data was processed through US based servers as opposed to the intended Canadian Servers because of a configuration error.

This is extremely alarming and it adds to the current stress that we are experiencing through an ongoing pandemic.

The students of BIOL 3130 believe that the use of Proctortrack comes with more risks than benefits.

Many of us suffer from extreme anxiety while taking any form of examination and having a camera on us, recording every move, further adds to this anxiety which would negatively affect our grade.

To add to the anxiety and stress, it should be brought to your attention that many of us students live in shared households. Many do not have access to an isolated area which puts us at a higher risk of being suspected for cheating if there are any background noises or interferences.

The use of this service also restricts us from taking exams in our own comfort. For example, we have been made aware that you are restricted from looking away from the screen. While taking an exam, in-class or online, it is almost impossible to stare at either a page or screen for a prolonged period of time. None of us want to put our grade at risk just because our eyes have wandered off the screen which can be due to numerous health concerns or natural human behavior traits.

With the use of any software, the risk of technological errors are prevalent. Not everyone has access to the best or appropriate technology. It will be difficult to use this software and write the exam at the same time to the best of our abilities.

We do understand that it is necessary to ensure that all students are complying with the Academic Honesty Act at York University but there are multiple alternatives which are not as invasive as Proctortrack. For example, "window blocking" is a possible solution as it prevents students from leaving the exam page. On the midterms, the ability for students to move back and forth between questions was disabled. This can also be used for the final exam. For example in the S1 term, Biol 3110 (Molecular Biology 1) did not use Proctortrack for the final exam.

The final exam is worth 50% and is 3 hours long. Forcing students to use an unfamiliar and invasive application while taking the test will only induce anxiety and negatively affect student's performance on the final exam.
