List The Clementhorpe Malthouse, York as an Asset Of Community Value and delay any decision on granting planning permission to convert it into private residences

There is an intense desire to retain this building for community use. There was negligible consultation with the local community before a condition of sale was agreed with local developers to convert it into 6 private dwellings. The Community Association arranged viewings of the building and over 75 people attended & more than 60 people came to the public meetings. All present voted for the Community Association to apply for an ACV. The ACV is designed to allow communities to put together a bid that might further the cultural, historic or sporting aspirations of that community. The proximity of the malt-house to the small Community Centre opposite would make this an ideal link to provide a whole range of activities, events and exhibitions that would bring the property to life and display the listed contents to the public. The aim would be to turn the space into a community hub that would express the history & cultural significance of the area and demonstrate the Victorian legacy in the building. We would also look at provision for artist studios. There is interest in setting up a micro brewery and a café. The community firmly believe that, given time, they could secure funds to make this unique space a viable and self sustaining enterprise.
