For my Preparation for Citizenship class, we have been assigned a project where we find a problem in our community and try to fix it. The problem I am working on is the skateboarding ordinance in York, Maine. Many people want to skateboard around the beaches for fun, but because of this ordinance it is illegal, and the police will tell you to stop and could give you a ticket or confiscate your skateboard. The fines start at $50 and increase to $100. This criminalizes the act of skateboarding and often makes young and seasoned skateboarders look like criminals. Skateboards, especially in a town like York, can also be used as a form of transportation. When done safely, skateboarding can be a fun and active pastime. For these reasons, I would like to see changes made to this existing policy.
