Silver Lake Heritage Trust started this petition to Mayor Eric Garcetti and

On April 22nd, the 1937 Art Deco building at 1626 Silver Lake Boulevard, formerly known as "Yolk", was illegally demolished with no approved permits or plans. In doing so, the owner ignored City regulations and destroyed the building with no preliminary inspections to determine which mitigation measures would be required to protect the community from toxic exposure to lead, dust, asbestos, and other hazards common in older buildings. There was no 30-day posting notice as required by the City per Mitch O'Farrell's "Demolition Notification Ordinance", and the demolition occurred without the prerequisite fencing in place to protect the neighbors.

The owner/developer is Anup Jogani, a jewelry business owner from Beverly Hills, who demolished the building over the Easter holiday.  Their plan is to build a 4-story office building on this lot, which sits at the center of the historic Silver Lake Village Planning District, as mentioned in the City's historic Survey LA

City officials are in agreement that the owner, "exceeded the scope of his permit", which requests a "four story office addition to existing 1 story office" and has yet to be approved.  This same owner was given an order to comply by LA Code Enforcement for unpermitted work on this same property last September.  This blatant and continued disregard for the community and our laws is disrespectful, reckless and dangerous; we ask that the City require the owner to rebuild this iconic structure exactly as it was.
