On Friday, Nov. 3 at 3:41 p.m., the lives of 87 families and 105 children were put into immediate disarray when the YMCA of Monroe County sent an email to parents informing them that the YMCA Center for Children and Families would permanently close no later than Dec. 22.
With just seven weeks notice, parents are now struggling to find alternate child care arrangements in a community where many centers have long waitlists. With just seven weeks notice, 47 YCCF employees will be unemployed right before the holiday season.
The YMCA said that it had been heavily subsidizing the cost of running the YCCF for years, and had tried multiple solutions to avoid such a drastic move. But none of the parents knew of any problems, and certainly there was no work to reach out to parents to help bridge the budget shortfall. They have also given a range of diffent numbers, with no transparency.
For many of us, we saw our children flourish at the YCCF. Under teachers who love and care deeply for them, our kids explored and learned and loved and built a “healthy spirit, mind, and body,” in line with the YMCA’s own principles.
We understand that non-profits have to make ends meet, but we don’t believe that the YMCA of Monroe County was socially responsible to and respectful of the families and the community in the way this was handled. We would have (and still want to) find a solution, and we want to be shown (and not just told) that all was done to prevent this.
We also want the leadership of the YMCA of Monroe County and the community at large to understand just how meaningful the YCCF is to our families. We want the YMCA of Monroe County to be held accountable for their decisions and lack of social responsibility to do all that they can to provide high quality early childhood education in the community. We want to know what is more important than this mission.
