locks bathrooms started this petition to YLS

Anyone who has ever tried to use the L4 bathrooms in the library is familiar with the awkward attempt to open the bathroom's door hoping (a) the door is unlocked, and (b) there is no one inside.

The optimal outcome is achieved if both (a) and (b) are true. In that case the person attempting to use the bathroom emerges from the experience relieved both in the literal and emotional senses, knowing that when she was pushing the handle from the outside, no one inside was frightened they forgot to lock the door (that is because the distance between the lock and the main area of residence inside the bathroom is too far to hold the door closed).

Things may however go wrong in two ways:

Mildly: (a) and (b) are false, in which case one has to repeat the same awkward attempt to enter the other bathroom on L4 and create unnecessary noise produced by pushing the handles;

Disastrously: (a) is true but (b) is false, in which case both the person entering the bathroom and the person in residence at the bathroom are left to deal with severe emotional trauma.

To avoid minor and major disturbances to the mental health of students on L4, we therefore petition to change the two bathroom locks to Occupancy-Indicator Locks of the sort already installed on some bathroom doors at YLS.

Join us today so that you can be left alone (in the bathroom) tomorrow.
