Why this petition matters

Started by Samuel Speed

Hello, my name is Sam, a senior at Yorktown ISD. I've done my time all through the public school system and faced an unfavorable amount of homework all throughout my years. I believe that homework is an unneeded task placed on top of students to force material down their throats in hope of them understanding it. However, it is in fact doing the complete opposite.

A study done at Stanford University found that "students in high-achieving communities who spend too much time on homework experience more stress, physical health problems, a lack of balance in their lives, and alienation from society." Especially in COVID's America, students from kindergarten through 12th grade have an extraordinary of stress-induced factors that school can't control. On the other hand, schools can control not giving out unneeded assignments through homework

I, and many of my peers, believe that if the material isn't fully understood in class, then it shouldn't be given to be completed out of class. One then faces problems with time conflicts and academic dishonesty through cheating. Although I don't condone cheating, it is a definite by-product of homework. If you aren't fully grasping the concepts in class and you can either cheat and pass or not complete the assignment and fail, options are limited

Thank you for reading my petition, and I hope you agree, sign, and make things change for the better!
