Keep Yarmouth Schools Great - Stand by Our Teachers!

The Yarmouth School Committee has issued an amendment to a longstanding benefit to our hardworking teachers, allowing their children to attend Yarmouth schools free of charge. This practice encourages teachers to invest more time in our schools; time helping students with work after school or time devoted to extra curricular activities that further enrich the education of our students.
Currently there are 23 children of teachers who attend Yarmouth schools. Under the proposed change, if the teacher's home school district superintendent doesn't agree with the family's decision to have their children enrolled in Yarmouth, the teacher's family will have to pay tuition to the town of Yarmouth in order to continue to bring their children here. In addition, this waiver process has to be repeated every year that the child attends Yarmouth and can take until mid-August to be finalized, leaving a family in limbo and putting undo stress on our teachers.
Changing this practice will not save the Yarmouth taxpayers a significant amount of money in the upcoming school year. The number of children in question is so small that it would not reduce staffing, which comprises 80% of the school budget. The School Committee should look elsewhere to find the savings needed to balance the budget. The current practice of allowing teachers the option to bring their children with them to their teaching school district is a longstanding one that is common throughout Maine. It helps Yarmouth to attract and retain some of the highest quality teachers, as teachers know their children will get a great education here and it allows them the flexibility in their schedule to do their best teaching.
By signing this petition, you are joining with many other Yarmouth residents to say to the School Committee that we oppose this proposed change. Teachers should be allowed and encouraged to bring their children to Yarmouth schools. Changing this practice now would be short sighted and unfair to our hardworking and professional team of educators.
