The herbicide glyphosate has been determined to be a “probable carcinogen” by the IARC and World Health Organization. Glyphosate is the main chemical in Rodeo, used by the French Broad Electric Membership Corporation (FBEMC), to kill vegetation under the power lines, which stretch along hundreds of miles of waterways, planted and natural food crops and drinking water sources. Three lawsuits have awarded hundreds of millions of dollars in damages to people who got cancer after spraying glyphosate. 18,400 plaintiffs are now moving through the courts with claims of disease and death from exposure to chemical herbicides.

Imasapyr, found in Polaris, another chemical  being sprayed by FBEMC. Polaris' Data Safety Sheet states this herbicide's "potential to leach is high" and "should be prevented from entering any waterways.” Yet it is being sprayed regularly on the banks of our waterways.

Agricultural products and organic farming are the main economic drivers of Yancey County's economy. Chemical herbicide spraying by FBEMC is causing grave health concerns for people who grow and eat food growing along the waterways, drink water from wells and springs on their land, and graze animals under the power lines. Severe economic impacts are threatening certified organic farmers and registered hemp farmers. Land tainted by chemical herbicides loses its organic certification and economic use for people who would come here to buy land for farming.

We are asking Yancey County to ban the spraying of the chemicals glyphosate and Imasapyr immediately, for our health and for the health of Yancey County's Economy.
