Punish rape and other acts of so-called "nonconsensual sex" with expulsion

No university should award degrees to individuals it knows to have committed acts of sexual violence. That an institution as renowned as Yale would do so is both astounding and disgusting. Please sign our petition calling on Yale to make expulsion the standard punishment for students who commit rape or other acts of serious sexual violence.

BACKGROUND

On July 31, 2013, Yale University issued its semi-annual "Report of Complaints of Sexual Misconduct," which can be read here.

This report included passages such as the following: "A YC student brought a formal complaint to the UWC charging that two YC students had engaged in nonconsensual sex with her. The UWC found a violation of the University’s sexual misconduct policy. Written reprimands were issued to the respondents and measures were taken to limit contact between the parties."

In response to national criticism, Yale released a statement on August 2nd, which can be read here.

This report included the following claim: "...the range of penalties described in these reports reflects our readiness to impose harsh sanctions when the findings warrant them."

Yet the harshest penalty given to an undergraduate found by the university to have engaged in “nonconsensual sex” was two semesters’ suspension. Most punishments took the form of administrative wrist slaps--either written reprimands, or mandatory counseling.

Please help us make it clear to Yale University that in instances of sexual violence, neither two semesters' suspension nor written reprimands constitute sufficiently harsh punishment.
