Chinese International Students of Yale started this petition to Yale University and

We really appreciate Yale's great efforts on helping international students this Fall 2020 and understood it takes a lot of works to prepare for the remote study. As the representative of the Chinese international students who are unable to get to New Haven due to current turbulences in both politics and pandemics, we sincerely ask Yale to consider an alternative plan: to cooperate with institutions abroad that have an existing partnership with Yale through various study abroad programs and provide international students with the option of studying in their home country universities, during the period of travel restrictions.

Remote learning indeed causes many barriers for international students, such as jet lag (live classes and conferences) and VPN(some Internet accesses are banned), etc. Compared with taking courses online at home, we believe this alternative plan has multiple advantages: firstly, the education quality for students who are unable to use Yale’s local resources will not be much compromised, as having the rights to access to the facilities and resources of local institutions, especially better study environments which many of us are highly concerned with regarding the remote option; secondly, students can build the sense of community with other Yale students studying at the same institution and create a more interactive learning environment that students will not feel as lonely as staying at home; thirdly, It is a good time for Yale to strengthen its collaborations with Chinese universities and maybe prepare for future academic communications.

In fact, many US institutions have already adopted similar plans for their international student body that maybe helpful for Yale to refer to. For example, Cornell has announced its collaborations with Tsinghua University, Peking University, and offers multiple campus choices for its incoming new students that students can pick 2 courses in the local campus and take 12-15 credits online courses. University of North Carolina, New York University, Duke University, UIUC, Tulane University, and the University of Pittsburgh decided to use similar plans through cooperation with their partner institutions. Yale already has partnerships with a few Chinese universities. Yale School of Public Health has collaborative BS+MPH programs with Zhejiang University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University; the School of Management has collaborations with Fudan University and Tsinghua University, and we believe that it’s worth reaching out to these institutions to establish this alternative plan.

As a part of Yale community, we think our rights to have world-class education is also important that this alternative plan may be a better choice in this period. We understand that this process can be highly complicated and needs tons of efforts for the administration team. However, while Yale are planning for the return to campus for the majority of Yale students, we sincerely ask you to recognize the struggles and needs of the international students and allocate sufficient resources for us who are also the victims of the pandemic. As far as we know, many Chinese universities are willing to cooperate with Yale, and we believe that as one of the top universities in the world, Yale has that much reputation to initiate such collaboration. We would appreciate it if Yale can take this suggestion seriously and negotiate with institutions abroad to provide international students with this alternative option.
