A Student . started this petition to Yale University and

On behalf of all the students hoping to attend Yale Young Global Scholars this summer, we'd first like to thank Yale University for what they are doing right now. We understand that unfortunate situations like these may arise, and it makes us nothing short of grateful for the effort that the program is putting into keeping it alive. This petition is not meant to outright demand change from the program, but rather, is a collection of beliefs and opinions from the students. Since the survey for alternative options was only sent out to students from Session 1, this petition also contains the collective stance of students from Session 2 and 3.

We are writing only to humbly express our views on the situation, and nothing more. Once again, thank you for all the work that you have put into making this program possible, and thank you for taking the time to read our thoughts.

For many of us, the prospect of attending Yale Young Global Scholars has been nothing but a dream, and achieving that acceptance letter only raises the excitement as we wait for the summer months to come. However, that opportunity seems to be in danger of fading as we move into the warmer months.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Yale University has been forced to close down Session 1 of the program, while the other 2 sessions are at stake. Since releasing the news, YYGS has been looking towards alternative methods to still provide the students with the opportunity that we were hoping for this summer. That comes down to the options of an online program or combining the sessions together, among others.

After discussing among all the students from all 3 sessions, we have come to the consensus that postponing or combining the sessions, instead of an online YYGS, would be much more beneficial. Provided below are the reasons why these two options stand as a much better alternative than an online YYGS.

1. A Matter of Time. YYGS is a global program with students all over the world coming to study under the tutelage of a prestigious school, and with that comes the aspect of time zones and geographical differences. Under a virtual platform, live broadcasted seminars and classes simply would not work out with the vast difference in time zones. It would provide an unfair and unequal opportunity for each student, depending on where they live. Additionally, even if classes are "recorded" for students, the experience does not live up to a live face-to-face class, conversing with professors and your fellow scholars.

2. A Matter of Experience. As it goes without saying, part of these summer programs are also dedicated towards making memories, fostering relationships, and meeting and experiencing new environments. Confined to the four walls of your own home, an online course would not meet those same expectations that everyone has been so excited for in the coming months. On top of having a subpar experience with classes itself, the attractive lifestyle of the program as well will be taken away.

3. A Matter of Money. Currently, the cost for an online session is about $3000, as stated by the Yale staff. Many of us agree that for a virtual program, three thousand dollars is much too costly, especially with all the factors listed above.

Yale Young Global Scholars is a renowned program that we do not want to miss, and we do not want to be replaced with a virtual platform. We hope to postpone, or join the sessions together, and make this summer at Yale what it really was meant to be.
